Yukari is one of the best kimono dressers with excellent special skills in NYC! JPA had a video shooting session last Sunday and she dressed about ten non-ordinary kinds of kimono (dragging bottom type) alone! There are many details to properly dress kimono costumes and they can only be acquired through lots of experiences. Kimono Dressers need to know the characters of each particular kimono and how each one fits to the person dressing up.
On top of that, our dynamic dance choreography in kimono causes disintegration of the originally fitted shape, so we need the right skilled person for the dancers to keep the kimono beautiful for a long time, and from time to time the fitting requires adjustments.
Yukari did a great job! We could dance without hesitation to fully move around.
Yukari is an extraordinary hair designer as well.

We are pleased to announce our theater production We are pleased to announce our theater production "JPA Cultural Repertoires 2017," which is the second production counting from the first one in 2015.
In 2015, we performed in front of a full house. Thanks to our amazing patrons.
This year's show is a bigger production than anything that's come before it.
Our show consists of three distinct categories; the kimono show, the Nihon Buyo (one of the traditional Japanese dances), and folk performing arts from three different regions in Japan.
Especially this time, we are inviting professional Bunraku puppeteers from Osaka. This is the first time in about 25 years since the last time Bunraku puppeteers came to perform in NYC. Bunraku is listed as one of UNESCO World Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003). Each performance will have a corresponding set of videos and images that will be displayed on stage with our MCs to explain its details.
The opportunity of seeing all these performances live in one production is a rare opportunity in not only NY but in Japan as well. You do not want to miss this special opportunity, and we'd love to see you there. Come on over to the Peter Norton Symphony Space!

March in Japan is the last month of the school yea March in Japan is the last month of the school year. Accordingly, Japanese schools' graduation ceremonies are held in March. Japanese higher education for women started in 1872. In this era, it was the norm for women to wear hakama to school like men. As a remnant of this tradition, many students now attend graduation ceremonies in hakama.
Here are some pictures of three ladies walking around Midtown in Manhattan wearing a hakama!

One of our activities during this early summer is One of our activities during this early summer is participating in the Japan Parade 2023! The parade will be held on Saturday, May 13th. Just like last year, JPA will perform Awa Odori (from Tokushima prefecture) and Gujo Odori (from Gifu prefecture) dances in the parade.  We will let you know more details once it is officially announced.
If you are interested in knowing more about these two Japanese Bon Odori dances, please read the content below.
Awa Odori and Gujo Odori are two of the so-called Big Three Bon Odori dances in Japan. Bon Odori used to be a part of Buddhist chanting dance rituals dating as far back as 1200 years ago. Today, there are many Bon Odori dances throughout Japan that have been created at many localities and regions containing special characteristics. The Big Three Bon dances are said to have the greatest depth of history and the cultural significance. Out of the Big Three, Gujo Odori and Nishimonai Bon Odori (the last but not the least of the Big Three) are listed among the UNESCO World Intangible Cultural Heritage since last October.
Mostly, Bon Odori dances usually form a circle so that the same dance moves can be performed for a long time in the same place, but for one dance, Awa Odori of Tokushima City, people dance in a parade format without forming a circle. This has to do with a geographical factor in the old days of Tokushima City, where the Awa Odori dance originated.
Tokushima City used to be consisted of many islands formed by the earth and sand that came from a big river called Yoshino River (Today, the islands have been reclaimed and are connected to the land.) Each of these islands had its own town, but there was no big plaza space to dance the Bon Odori. So they started to dance along the streets in a parade format.

Japanese Fabric/Paper Folding Culture has been use Japanese Fabric/Paper Folding Culture has been used in many formats. Kimono’s obi, furoshiki, and origami are the notably famous ones, all of which are made from a flat material! 😊
(1) Obi: A flat rectangle obi, 30 cm wide and about 4 meters long, is wrapped twice around the kimono wearer's waist, then the remaining portion is used to make decorations. It is said that there are more than 200 types of knots. ✌️

2) Furoshiki: Furoshiki has a history of 1,300 years. Furoshiki sizes vary depending on the size of the item to be wrapped. Currently, there are about 10 different square sizes, ranging from 48 cm (the smallest size) to 238 cm (the largest). There are many items in Japan that were created based on the “zero waste” concept or minimalism. Furoshiki is one of the best examples of such items. ✌️
3) Origami: Origami is currently already famous worldwide. It is said that origami originated about 1,400 years ago, but it is widely believed that people started crafting paper imitations of tangible objects around 400 years ago like what we know as origami today. 1797 saw the publication of the oldest book on origami in the world. ✌️
JPA will introduce Japanese fabric/paper folding and wrapping culture with workshop sessions this year!! We will hold free workshops, so please join us. 👋👋👋

Hair style is very important when you wear a kimono. Hair designers learn not only hair-setting techniques but also kimono knowledge at a professional school. For formal kimono, people with long hair are always required to have their hair up.

Colors used in kimono are often more subdued than vivid. This is probably because Japanese people prefer kimono colors that blend in with colors in nature.
In New York, wearing gorgeous colors seems to finally be in tune with the energy of the city.

We will start the practice of Wotagei this week fo We will start the practice of Wotagei this week for our wotagei performance debut for the summer of 2023!
Do you know what “wotagei (or otagei)” is?
It is a Japanese contemporary group dance performance gaining popularity with around two decades of history in Japan.
It has its original roots in cheering for idol singers with pen lights. The cheering has developed into an independent form of group dance entertainment with the pen lights in a dark space.
If you are interested, there are some English language sources by searching for a wotagei (or otagei), so you can have a general idea how it looks like.
Wotagei performers are currently predominantly male dancers, but JPA is starting a female wotagei group! 8 members so far!

In many traditional Japanese performing arts, the dance forms and movements have become refined and sophisticated over hundreds of years. Every part of the body is under the rules and control to get the perfect movement at each moment.
At first, many students think these minute details are not so significant, but on stage, neglected details ruin the entire aesthetics in the art form.
The audience can tell the difference even if they have never learned the dance before. They know what is beautiful, and what is less so.
Notably in traditional Japanese dance, the dancers are not encouraged to dance emotionally, but the physical beauty needs to come first.

The photo is a drawing of how to memorize the choreography of traditional Japanese dance.
In Traditional Japanese Dance, we still have many traditional ways to learn the dance. One of them, you are not allowed to video-record the choreography to learn it. You are supposed to memorize the dance pieces by the pictures, the songs, and the simple written instructions by yourself.
Currently, we have many convenient items, but there are still many schools that do not use them in traditional arts. This comes from a view that living without all the technologies available can serve as a way to preserve the spiritual values that have long been established in the past.
At JPA, we consider this approach does not fit into the NY way of life, so we allow our students to study by recording videos.😊

Many people watched us dance, smiling! It was our last session of Awa Odori practice in 2022, but it was also the first practice toward the Japan Parade in May, 2023! We learned the new choreography and practiced with live music for the first time! Can't wait until we dance together with those who couldn't join yesterday. We will resume our practice in January! Thank you again for joining JPA Awa Odori practice this year! See you in January 2023!

Yuko Hamada performed three classic Japanese dance Yuko Hamada performed three classic Japanese dance pieces on October 29th. These photos are from one piece, "Fumiuri (Love Letter Scribe)" and another piece, "Onna Sukeroku (female version of Sukeroku - name of a male hiro figure from 300 years ago). The photos of another piece, "Kurokami" were already uploaded a week ago.
We introduced the kimono shape as one of the biggest influences for the traditional Japanese dance movement, that the shape limits the body movement. Within the limitation, many rules came about to form the traditional Japanese dance movements. The dance presentation became the expression of symbolisms.
Yuko chose very different characters in order to present the subtleness of using different muscles and body parts that can reflect the character differences even with the body fully covered in kimono. These traditional Japanese dance forms have been refined for over 400 years. After long years of training and mastering these forms, you can play these characters to the full extent. Mastering the form is said to be only the beginning phase as a Nichibu dancer.
