JAPANESE TRADITIONAL HAIR DESIGNS
Nihongami is a traditional Japanese hairstyle broadly from Azuchi-Momoyama period (1568 to 1603) to the end of the Edo period (1603-1868). Today the hairstyle is most often seen with maiko (geisha apprentices). Nihongami typically consists of four parts with its hair volumized front, sides and back. It requires long hair carefully combed to tie the top-knot together with special hair wax, bintsuke. Kanzashi, special hair ornaments, usually add the finishing touch to this hairstyle.
Below are some examples of nihongami hairstyle. The right column displays a maiko-style nihongami. The one on the left shows genroku-style nihongami.
